Meanwhile, developer David Nunes, who wants to build a casino and 350-room hotel plus retail and restaurants in Milford, had a message for any Suffolk Downs honchos who might have been popping champagne bottles yesterday.Ā ā€œIā€™d keep the foil on those corks,ā€ Nunes said. ā€œI absolutely will give them a challenge ā€” unequivocally.ā€

The vote also underscores the difficulties in locating a casino resort within the most populous region.

With its plans for a $1 billion resort, the backing of industry giant Caesars Entertainment, and the support of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Suffolk Downs would appear to be the favorite for that license, one of three available under the state’s Expanded Gaming Act. Its lone remaining challenger is developer David Nunes, who has proposed an $850 million casino along Interstate 495 in Milford.
