WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE – 08/05/25

FINANCE DEPARTMENT
The Finance Department reported last week that the town’s checks and balances software system intercepted an attempted check fraud using the town’s accounts payable account. They followed up with the bank and filed a police report accordingly. The Town Treasurer explained that a vendor tried to write checks using the town’s account number and routing number, a fraud scheme which is not uncommon among other communities. He noted that the town is very well protected with the bank’s Positive Pay software system in place which identifies checks that do not match with the town’s records and requires the town’s approval to process them. The HPD confirmed receipt of the police report and noted that an update on the situation will be forthcoming.

MAIN STREET CORRIDOR PROJECT
The latest Main Street Corridor Project update indicated a disagreement between the town and Verizon over Verizon’s work schedule, as other remaining work is nearing completion. While Verizon planned to be on-site 1-2 days per week, the town has deemed this unacceptable, noting that a full-time on-site schedule could still take four to six weeks for completion. Town officials will be calling for more action and seeking resolution.
