Hopkinton Housing Authority – Did you know?
The Hopkinton Housing Authority shall conduct studies of the housing needs of the community and shall provide programs to make available housing for families of low income and for elderly persons of low income. The Hopkinton Housing Authority shall have such other powers and duties as are assigned to housing authorities by general law. (MGL Part I, Title XVII, Chapter 121B, Section 26)
The HHA meets regularly once per month, typically on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The executive director handles all of the day to day activities, leaving the HHA board with long term goals, finance/budget, and policy making. Having a background that involves state and local government, property management, consulting, or housing/property law is ideal. But a new HHA board member can you learn a lot after joining and seeing what goes into it. There are certifications that are recommended by the Department of Housing and Community Development that allow anyone to learn more about the problems facing public housing and ways that other communities are attempting to solve those problems.
To run for one of the elected positions on the HHA a person must be a registered voter in Hopkinton and either obtain and submit nomination papers by securing the signatures of 50 Hopkinton registered voters; or a person may qualify by being the top vote getter in one of the town political party caucuses; or a combination of both. HHA is currently an unpaid volunteer position, but compensation for any elected official could be voted on at any future town meeting.
